Room 104 – Grade5/6 

Welcome to a new school year! 

My name is Ms. Sharma, and I am very excited to be starting off the year with your child. I look forward to creating a safe, inclusive classroom where every student feels supported and ready to learn!

Below, you will find a brief overview of the concepts students will learn this year, along with important information to help your child have a successful learning experience. I am confident that your child will have a wonderful year!

Curriculum Overview 

Where possible, subject areas will be integrated to help students make meaningful connections between their learning.

English Language Arts: Students will use language to listen, speak, view, read, write, and represent. They will learn different strategies to think about and understand what they read, see, hear, and watch. Asking good questions about a research topic, creating and following a plan, and finding quality information to complete a research project is an important part of our curriculum. Students will learn to create messages, stories, and presentations that are clear and interesting for their listeners and readers. Students will also participate in daily phonics instruction and the Units of Study writing program.

Math: Students will develop strong mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills through a variety of hands-on, visual, and strategic approaches. We will build and strengthen understanding of multiplication and division, including mental math, estimation, standard algorithms, and problem solving. Students will also explore fractions, decimals, ratios, percents, integers, factors and multiples, patterns and relationships, measurement, geometry, statistics, and probability. Throughout the year, students will be encouraged to explain their thinking, make connections, use mathematical strategies flexibly, and apply their learning to real-world situations.

Social Studies: Students will explore Canada and the world through the study of geography, cultures, communities, Indigenous perspectives, government, citizenship, historical events, and Canada’s development.

Science: Through hands-on investigations and research, students will explore topics such as Diversity of Living Things, Flight, Electricity, maintaining a healthy body and the Solar System while developing their scientific thinking, inquiry, problem-solving, and design skills.

Art: In Art, students will explore creativity through a variety of materials, techniques, and artistic processes while learning about the elements and principles of art. They will develop, share, and reflect on their ideas while exploring different forms of artistic expression.

Health: Students will learn about safety, personal and social management, Healthy bones, Drugs and Alcohol and Family life.

Goals & Expectations:Our class and school make up a community of learners. We will share our strengths and work on our challenges to help everyone succeed. We will nurture a caring environment where all students feel accepted, respected, valued and safe. Students will follow the Robertson School rules of making good choices by being responsible, respectful and safe in all areas of our building.

Reminder: Cell Phones are not permitted during the school day as per government policy. Hence, phones brought to school must be handed in to the teacher in the morning and will be returned at the end of the day. Cell phones brought to school are at your own risk; the WSD and Robertson School are not responsible for lost or stolen cell phones. Families who need to contact their child during the school day should contact the school office to speak with their child.

Assessment: Assessment will be an ongoing part of our classroom. Students will demonstrate their learning through discussions, observations, daily work, assignments, projects, quizzes, tests, writing, problem-solving activities, presentations, and other learning tasks. Both formal and informal assessment will provide meaningful feedback to highlight strengths and identify areas for growth. Students will also reflect on their learning and set goals to support their continued growth and success.

Communication: Communication between home and school is an important part of a successful school year. I value working together with families to support each child’s learning, well-being, and success. Home Learning expectations: Home reading— Minimum 30 minutes per day Math— Practicing basic math facts( addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division)
