Room 153 Overview (Grade 2 and 3 multiage)

Dear Parents/ Guardians,

Welcome to grade 2 and 3, I am very excited to welcome you to our classroom! My name is Shannon Sylvester and I will be your child’s teacher for this school year. I cannot wait to learn and grow together!

Here is an overview of what to expect for your child this 2026-2027 year at Robertson School!

Please note! The school is NUT FREE (of all types), fish and seafood free due to allergies. I would also appreciate you sending a pre-filled reusable water bottle to school for your child to drink throughout the day. There are water bottle filling stations they can use if they run out.

Communication:

Communication regarding upcoming events, important notices, and classroom activities will be shared in several ways. I will communicate classroom activities, reminders, and other classroom information to parents through Seesaw. The school will also send important notices and information about upcoming events through School Messenger. Please make sure to check Seesaw and School Messenger daily so that you do not miss any important information.

Forms and other important documents will be sent home in your child’s home-to-school folder (please return daily).

These are the entrance and dismissal times.

Absences and Lates:

If you are aware of your child’s absence, please call the office. If we are unaware of your child’s absence, the school will call to verify the absence. If your child is late, bring your child to the front office since all doors will be locked.

Recesses and Lunch:

Please ensure that all snacks and lunches are all peanut/nut-free and seafood and fish-free, due to allergies. Students will eat in their own classrooms.

Home Reading:

Your child is responsible for the books they sign out, and they are expected to return their books in their Home Reading bag. (This starts end of September). All books are to be returned every Monday.

Assessment and Evaluation:

Assessment will be an ongoing process throughout the school year. Your child’s progress will be monitored in a variety of ways such as: through phonics, writing and math assessments, daily classroom work, discussion contributions, written and oral explanations, group projects and presentations, class participation and teacher observation.

Subject Overview: (Please note programming is catered to your child’s individual needs)

Language arts:

-Daily literacy circles which include activities such as journaling, writing and practising reading to self and others

-Working on phonics work

-Listening to reading such as during a teacher or peer read aloud

-Writing activities such as story writing, informational writing such as “how-to’s” and persuasive writing. Writing related to inquiry projects will also be included

-Participating in phonics groups with the teacher or other adults

Math:

-Number sense- students will be able to represent and describe whole number using pictures and symbols

-Basic operations of math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

-Mental math including learning how to describe how they got their answer and application of math strategies such as skip-counting, adding one more and doubling or halving strategies

-Identifying patterns

-Analysing 3D and 2D shapes in math and the world around us

-Using counters, shapes and games to make learning fun and engaging

Science

We will be studying science using inquiry, research and questioning. Assignments may include presentations, group work, discussions and experiments.

Social Studies:

We will be discussing topics related to community, Canada, what it means to be a Canadian and what it means to be a citizen. Social Studies topics will be discussed as a group, researched using books and technology. Social Studies may be integrated into the inquiry journey through mapping, citizenship and studying other parts of the world.

Health:

The class will be concentrating on themes such as; citizenship and respect, a healthy body, safety and mindfulness. We will also be looking into healthy strategies to cope with big emotions through the program “Kids in the Know.”

Art:

During art class we are going to be examining a variety of art forms and how to create art. We will also spend time looking at art and discussing it.

Physical Education and Music:

PE: Day 2, 3 and 4

Music: Day 1, 2, 5 and 6

Students must wear non- marking, indoor runners during Physical Education classes. Crocs, sandals, and boots are not permitted.

Birthdays and Holiday Parties

If you would like to send treats (peanut/nut free) for the class, please choose something quick and easy to hand out during recess or lunch time. Simple, individually packaged treats work best so that students can enjoy them without taking away from learning time. As for Holiday Parties, I will send an email out prior to the holiday regarding sign-up for volunteers if people wish to contribute.
