Grade 1 – Room 152

I am so excited to begin this new school year with you and your child! This year marks my twelfth year at Robertson. I am committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging classroom environment where every child feels valued and supported and part of the classroom community. I look forward to a wonderful year filled with learning, growth, and fun.

This year, we will focus on building strong numeracy and literacy skills through everyday practice. We will also be exploring science, social studies, art and health in engaging ways. Learning will take place through hands-on activities and projects, use of technology, mindfulness activities that encourage focus and wellbeing, and outdoor experiences. The goal is to have students see themselves as part of the community and as a learner who is confident in asking questions, being curious, sharing ideas and using different methods to solve problems.

Numeracy (Math)

In math, we will work together to strengthen their understanding of numbers and how the work together. We will explore several different strategies such as making tens, skip counting, counting on and doubles. We will also explore measurement and data and patterns. My goal is to help students feel confident with problem solving, use correct math vocabulary and be able to explain their mathematical thinking to others.

Literacy (Reading and Writing)

Students will continue to develop their reading and writing skills through daily practice. We will look at a variety of texts together, including stories, nonfiction, poetry and shared reading. Students will receive regularly scheduled reading instruction focusing on comprehension, fluency and strategies for sounding out unfamiliar words. Writing instruction will encourage students to express their ideas clearly with descriptive details, and organized thoughts. There will also be a Phonics component to our literacy time, phonics instruction plays a role in helping students to understand letter-sound relationships and spelling patterns. Every day we will engage with a variety of activities that include things such as read-aloud, independent reading, word-building and guided reading.

Inquiry and Beyond

Students will also be focusing on connections to science, social studies, art and health. We will learn about our community, the world around us, celebrate cultural traditions and explore how nature changes through the seasons. We will also be engaging in regular mindfulness activities to help students gain strategies to manage emotions and stay focused.

Helpful Info

- Students will have the opportunity to have a morning snack either right before AM recess or right after – dependent on our daily schedule. Please be sure to send a snack for them to enjoy at this time.

- Reminder – we are a nut free school. Please also refrain from sending foods that contain seafood, fish or fish sauce as we have students within the building with allergies to these food items.

- If your child is staying for lunch, please ensure they have foods that do not require heating up, containers they are able to open and cutlery needed.

- Please also send a refillable water bottle. We have access to a filling staying down the hall for easy refills.

- Please label all personal items – jackets, lunch bag, water bottle, shoes, etc. this will help to avoid mix ups.

Communication

I will be using Seesaw to help share our learning, snapshots of our days, updates and important information. Please make sure you connect to your child’s journal through the Seesaw family app. If you need help, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
