Mrs. Haggart Grade 2 Classroom Overview 2026-2027 

👋 Welcome to Grade 2

I am so excited to begin this new school year with your child! I am committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging classroom environment where every child feels valued and supported. I am looking forward to a wonderful year filled with learning, growth, and fun.

📚 Learning Focus

This year, students will focus on building strong literacy and numeracy skills every day while also exploring science, social studies, art, and health in engaging ways. Learning will take place through hands-on projects, group work, outdoor learning, and with the use of technology. I will incorporate different learning styles and strategies to help students feel curious and excited about their learning.

🔢 Math 

We will continue to develop a strong understanding of number relations and operations, while using different strategies to help solve problems. We will spend a lot of time working with addition and subtraction and building our number sense. Students will also explore measurement, patterns, shapes, and problem solving throughout the year. My goal is to help students develop strong problem-solving skills, use math vocabulary in meaningful ways, and learn from each other in a thinking classroom. 

✏️ Language Arts

In literacy, students will continue to grow as confident and independent readers and writers through daily practice. Reading instruction will focus on fluency, comprehension, and building strong reading practices. We will continue practicing Phonics skills, which play a significant role in helping students understand letter-sound relationships and spelling patterns. We will explore three main types of writing, including narratives, informational, and opinion writing. Writing lessons will encourage students to express their ideas, add descriptive details, and organize their thoughts. Each day, students will participate in guided activities such as independent reading and writing, writers' workshops, and phonics groups.

🌎 Science, Social Studies, Art & Health

In addition to literacy and numeracy, students will take part in inquiry-based projects that connect to science, social studies, art, and health. They will learn about their local community and the world around them, celebrate cultural traditions and diversity, and experience hands-on exploration during our outdoor classroom/learning time. 

📲 Communication

Communication bags will be used to send home any important notes or items, so please check your child’s backpack daily. I am not sure whether I will be using the communication platform Seesaw again this school year, so in the meantime, if you ever have a question, concern, or just want to check in, please do not hesitate to reach out. I want to make sure communication between home and school is easy and that we can work together to support your child throughout the year. 

🍎 A Few Reminders

Students will have a morning snack before recess, so please send a nut, fish, and seafood free snack each day. Students should also bring a refillable water bottle each morning. Please label all your child's belongings, including their jacket, shoes, lunch kit, and water bottle, with their name. This makes it much easier to make sure everything finds its way back home!
