👋 Welcome!

Welcome to Grade 2! I am so excited to have your child in my classroom this year. Grade 2 is an exciting year as students become more independent, take on new challenges, and continue to discover what they are capable of. We will spend the year building a strong classroom community, getting to know one another, and creating a space where students feel comfortable being themselves, making mistakes, and learning something new every day. I am looking forward to all of the fun, learning, and memories we will make together this year!

📚 What We’ll Be Learning

Our days in Grade 2 will be busy with lots of opportunities to read, write, problem solve, ask questions, and explore new ideas. While literacy and math will be an important part of our everyday learning, students will also have opportunities to investigate topics in Science and Social Studies. I like to make learning as hands-on and meaningful as possible, so students can expect plenty of discussion, activities, games, projects, and opportunities to show what they know in different ways.

🔢 Math

A big focus in Grade 2 will be developing a strong understanding of numbers and becoming more comfortable using different strategies to solve problems. We will spend lots of time working with addition and subtraction and building our number sense. Students will also explore measurement, patterns, shapes, and problem solving throughout the year. Rather than simply finding an answer, students will be encouraged to think about how they got there, explain their strategies, and learn from the different ways their classmates approach a problem.

✏️ Language Arts

There will be lots happening in Language Arts this year! Students will continue developing their phonics skills while working on reading, printing, sentence structure, and writing. We will explore three main types of writing: narrative, informational, and opinion writing. Students will have many opportunities to put their own ideas onto paper, learn how to organize their thoughts, and add details to their writing. We will also spend time building reading skills and developing strategies that will help students become more independent and confident readers.

🌎 Social Studies & Science

In Social Studies, we will start close to home by learning about our local community before looking more broadly at communities in Canada and the Canadian community. Students will have opportunities to think about the people, places, and things that make communities unique and how we are connected to the communities around us.

Science will give students the chance to be curious about the world around them. We will learn through exploring, observing, asking questions, and investigating different ideas. Whenever possible, I want students to be active participants in their learning rather than simply being told the answer!

📲 Staying Connected

This year, we are making the switch from Seesaw to ClassDojo! ClassDojo will be our main way of sharing classroom updates and communicating with families. It will also give you a glimpse into what your child is working on and learning throughout the year.

I want to make sure communication between home and school is easy and that we can work together to support your child throughout the year.

🍎 A Few Reminders

Students will have a morning snack before recess, so please send a nut-free snack each day. If your child is part of the lunch program, please keep their lunch separate from their snack. Students should also bring a refillable water bottle each morning. Please label your child's belongings—including their jacket, lunch kit, and water bottle—with their name. This makes it much easier to make sure everything finds its way back home!

I am really looking forward to getting to know your children and watching them grow throughout Grade 2. There will definitely be challenges along the way, but there will also be lots of laughter, exciting discoveries, proud moments, and “Look what I can do!” moments. I can't wait to see where this year takes us!
