Grade 5/6 Overview

As a community of learners, students at Robertson School are expected to be responsible, respectful, and safe.

Dear Families,

I am Tania MacKenzie, your child’s teacher, and welcome to the 2026–2027 school year at Robertson School!

My focus is to foster your child's critical thinking and curiosity through inquiry-based learning. This student-centered approach empowers learners to explore a range of topics both global and local that are meaningful to them. They’ll express their understanding through independent projects, small-group collaborations, and presentations that highlight their growth and creativity. Students will demonstrate their learning in ways that reflect their strengths and areas of interest. This will ensure that every learner has an opportunity to shine.

It is my intention that Rooms 103 remains a safe, supportive, and inclusive space where all students feel seen, heard, and valued. A nurturing environment helps build confidence, independence, and resilience qualities that support learning and strong relationships with peers and adults.

English Language Arts

English Language Arts is meaningfully woven into all areas of learning. Students will develop both fiction and nonfiction reading comprehension strategies and are encouraged to continue nightly home reading to build fluency and understanding. Writing instruction will focus on the complete writing process from initial draft to final product across narrative, persuasive, and informational genres. Students will engage in a variety of literacy activities such as whole-class discussions, independent reading with conferencing, read-alouds, novel studies, small-group book talks, creative writing, and quick writes.

Mathematics

The mathematics program emphasizes exploration, collaboration, and problem solving in real-world contexts. Students will develop multiple strategies to approach problems and strengthen their understanding of mathematical concepts. Through critical and creative thinking, data analysis, and logical reasoning, students will build confidence in their abilities. They will collaborate in random groups at vertical whiteboards to promote teamwork and academic risk-taking. Additionally, Math Talks will be used to encourage the sharing of strategies and reasoning.

Science and Social Studies

Science and Social Studies will be guided by inquiry and the design process, encouraging students to explore and respond to complex questions. In Science, students will investigate real-world problems using observation, experimentation, and collaboration. In Social Studies, students will engage with Canadian history and meaningful local and global issues through the lens of a responsible democratic citizen. They'll conduct research, refine ideas, and present their learning in both individual and group formats.

Attendance:

Students are to enter the school at 8:50 AM. Dismissal is at 3:25 PM. All absences must be reported through the Safe Arrival system. If not, an automated call will be sent to the guardian. Please contact the school office if you're unfamiliar with this system.

Reminders:

-Cell phones are not permitted during the school day as per government policy. Phones brought to school must be turned in to the teacher in the morning and will be returned at the end of the day.

-Dress appropriately for outdoor learning and recess.

-Indoor and outdoor shoes are required.

-Gym clothes should be kept at school.

-A reusable water bottle is encouraged daily.

-$40.00 for school supplies is due the first week of school unless alternate arrangements have been made with the teacher.

-Communication will be shared via email.
