Welcome to Nursery and Kindergarten!
Hello! My name is Ms. B and I am the Nursery and Kindergarten teacher at Pinkham School. I greatly value my role in providing a safe and caring learning environment for all learners. In the nursery and kindergarten classroom, students will have the opportunity to explore and discover through the joy and happiness of play!
C.A.R.E.
Students in the nursery and kindergarten classroom learn to understand the guiding principles of Pinkham School. The school principles support students’ ability to feel successful in school while showing respect towards themselves and others.
Play-Based Learning
Learning centres are set up in the classroom to evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity. Colourful paint, loose materials, paper and glue are accessible at the art centre, inviting students to express their creativity. Dolls, toy kitchen materials and toy food are set up at the dramatic play centre to invite students to express their imagination while learning to share and get along with others. Students explore the properties of shape, space and develop problem solving skills while building with blocks or creating castles at the sand table. Learning centres expand and change based on students interest and learning goals.
Literacy and Numeracy
While exploring at various learning centres, students develop literacy and numeracy skills composed by the Manitoba Curriculum. Students explore mathematical concepts such as patterns, number, shape and space. Students explore literacy skills such as rhyme, concepts about print and phonemic awareness.
Social Emotional Education
Students develop self-regulating skills which support their ability to be in control when strong emotions arise. Students learn to identify and understand various feelings. They will learn problem-solving strategies such as communicating their feelings with others. Students learn about friendship, compassion, empathy and respect. Students learn that making mistakes is part of learning and we are here to support each other. Students develop social emotional skills based on the resources in Second Step and Kids in the Know.
Indigenous Education
Students explore seasonal changes of nature while learning to respect and appreciate the beautiful gifts of Mother Earth. Students develop a connection to nature while exploring among the trees and grass. As a class, students are working towards expressing and learning about Truth and Reconciliation through education. Students will learn about ways to create peace and harmony among each other and nature through the Seven Teachings.
I am so exciting for a wonderful year of exploring, growing and learning through play!
