Music - Ms. Katie Prescott

October 10, 2024

At Pinkham School we are excited to expand the music program this year. Students will have Music classes 5 out of 6 days of the cycle. Students will use rhythmic and pitched instruments (e.g., rhythm sticks, and xylophones) for primary grade music learning. The intermediate grades will also be learning with recorders and ukuleles. The Manitoba Music Curriculum framework is based on four interrelated essential learning areas:

Making – voice, instruments, body and sound sources

Creating – idea generation; experimenting, developing, revision, refinement and sharing

Connecting – people and practices; genres, styles and traditions; roles, purposes and meanings

Responding – listening, observation and description; talking about music preferences; and identity

In addition to Music classes, there will be extra-curricular, lunch hour choirs practicing for assemblies, Music Festivals and school performances. The winter concert will be on Thursday, December 12th. The spring concert will be on Thursday, May 22nd.

Why Music?

In addition to Music concepts, students will:

• Interact with peers, using appropriate social skills

• Practice language skills

• Practice listening, responding & choice-making

• Improve fine & gross motor skills

• Develop high self-esteem & increased confidence

• Learn self-calming & relaxation skills

• Participate in creative self-expression

Musically yours,

Ms. Katie Prescott

“Music education can help spark a child’s imagination or ignite a lifetime of passion. When you provide a child with new worlds to explore and challenges to tackle, the possibilities are endless. Music education should not be a privilege for a lucky few, it should be a part of every child’s world of possibility.”
