Tyndall Park School phys. ed. teacher Diane Dow recently received the prestigious PHE Canada National Award for Teaching Excellence.
The award honours teachers who demonstrate exceptional ability to engage students. Recipients demonstrate thoughtful teaching practices that exemplify high-quality physical and health education across Canada.
Dow has taught for 21 years, with 16 years at Tyndall Park teaching physical education to nursery through grade 6 students.
"What I enjoy most about teaching PE is building long relationships with the children and forming strong connections," says Dow. "I get to watch the kids grow up and be part of their elementary school journey."
Her teaching approach involves creating a supportive environment. She fundamentally believes that children must feel safe before they can truly learn.
"The way to encourage students is to have them feel safe with you and in your class," says Dow. "It's important to provide a wide variety of opportunities to explore movement and adapt activities for individual needs."
Her teaching philosophy focuses on individual growth and encouragement. She works to motivate each student uniquely to achieve their personal best. This inclusive approach ensures no student feels left behind.
Dow knows that physical activity benefits extend far beyond physical health.
"It has been proven repeatedly that physical activity is crucial not only for physical health, but mental and emotional health," Dow notes. "It makes children more successful in learning and building social connections."
She recently attended the PHE Canada conference to accept her award. She returned with fresh ideas to enhance her already excellent program.
"This award means I have a responsibility to continue making PE meaningful," she explains. "I want to ensure every child enjoys coming to class and will want to stay physically active throughout their lives."
With teachers like Dow, students develop lifelong healthy habits and positive attitudes toward physical activity. Dow’s recognition is a reminder that quality physical education is essential for students’ complete development.
