Read to Succeed Fact Sheet

Winnipeg School Division (WSD) promotes literacy as a basic essential in learning and life. During the month of December, more than 49,000 books are distributed to WSD students of all ages to read over the holiday break. These books become part of students' home libraries, promoting reading at home with families and building stronger communities.
WSD involvement
- Read to Succeed is a month long event encouraging students to read, especially during their holiday break.
- In 2014, 25 schools in Winnipeg School Division participated in the book giveaway.
- Books are donated through First Book Canada.
- In 2014, 49,300 books were given, free of charge, to WSD students.
- WSD students have received166,300 free books for their home libraries since December 2012.
- Studies show a child from a family rich in books is more likely to complete university than a comparable child growing up without a home library (source: Research in Social Stratification and Mobility)
- Winnipeg School Division has participated in the book giveaway for four.
- Read to Succeed is a collaboration of Winnipeg School Division and First Book Canada http://www.firstbookcanada.org/ which has donated 3.5 million books in Canada to date.

Read to Succeed began in Winnipeg in 2012 through the Share the Magic program.
