Child Care Assistant

The high school Child Care Assistant (CCA) program is designed to train students to work in the profession of Early Childhood Education. Students participate in developing working knowledge, skills and abilities through academics, in-class hands-on activities, and practicum placements. Graduates are able to work in a variety of child care settings with children ranging in age from 12 weeks to 12 years. The CCA Grade 12 courses are recognized by the Manitoba Early Learning Child Care Program (MELCCP) as being equivalent to the 40 hour course needed by all Child Care Assistants.
Pre-Industry Training Option:
A five-month adult program option is offered for individuals who are interested in working in the Early Childhood Education profession or related occupations. The course consists of academics, hands-on activities, and a practicum placement. Graduates are able to find careers in a variety of child care settings working with a wide range of children. The adult CCA courses are recognized by the MELCCP as being equivalent to the 40 hour course needed by all Child Care Assistants.
Pre-Industry Training Start Dates:
There are two sessions which run consecutively during each school year. One five-month program begins in September with the second program starting in February. Several compulsory documents/requirements are needed by adults wanting to enrol in this program. Interested individuals must email the school for more information at rbrussell@wsd1.org

The Child Care Assistant Course
Grade 9 (.5 Credit)
The course includes an overview of pre-natal and post-natal development of children from birth to 12 months. Students will learn about teenage pregnancy and the specialized care and demands of newborns. Course work also includes the Pregnancy Profile curriculum, Reality Works simulator baby curriculum, and several hands-on projects and activities.
Grade 10 (1 Credit)
The course focuses on infant and toddler development, and basic care and positive interactions with children during this age. Students will learn about developmental milestones and the unique care required for children in this age group. Course work includes independent projects and group activities.
Grade 11 (4 Credits)
Students will have an overview of the types of child care facilities in Manitoba, theorists in childcare, diverse abilities and special needs of children, guided learning experiences in center curricula, childhood stressors, and developing positive working relationships. Course work includes independent projects and group activities. A practicum component will take place during
term 4.

Grade 12 (4 Credits)
Students learn about child development at specific ages, guidance of young children, development of safe and healthy environments, importance of play, childhood illnesses, and partnership with parents, professionalism, and guiding learning experiences. Course work includes independent projects and group activities. A practicum will take place during Term 4.
Students in Grade 11 and 12 are required to obtain a clear Child Abuse Check / Vulnerable Persons Check and Criminal Record Check (age dependent) prior to attending practicum.
