Law Class Field Trip

Law Class Field Trip

On December 4, DMCI’S grade 12 Law class attended a trial at the Manitoba Law Courts building and observed a real Canadian courtroom in action. It was an engaging experience for the students offering insight into what goes on during a trial and the many roles that work together to see a case to its conclusion.

Students found it fascinating to see legal words and concepts learned in class come to life. "The lawyers used terms that we had just learned in class a few days ago, and it was satisfying to understand what they were talking about," said Murphy V.

The field trip inspired students to reflect deeply on the justice system. "Law class gave me a better understanding of my rights and freedoms," Raine A. shared. “I would recommend this class to other students not only for the unique experience of attending a provincial trial, but also to gain more information about our laws and government.”

DMCI’s law teacher, Ms. Dennis, acknowledged the educational value of these field trips and invited students to return on their own, as courts are open to the public.

Students also gained insight on how the Canadian justice system differs from that of the United States. “In Canada, the highest sentence is life with the eligibility of parole in 25 years, while in the U.S., life in prison means that—no parole,” said Ms. Dennis.

Overall, the field trip was quite an enriching educational experience. The students left with a greater understanding of the justice system and more respect for those with careers in the legal field.
