Warm Soup for the Soul
While the chill of winter is upon us, the students of the WSD Adult EAL Program are keeping warm. As part of their settlement English curriculum, the students of the WSD Adult EAL Program are learning how to read recipes, shop for bargains and follow instructions. Using the teaching kitchen at 275 Portage Ave, students are making delicious soup recipes using low cost and readily available ingredients that provide a nutritious punch.
Food scarcity is an increasing problem for families across Canada. Many of the students in the WSD Adult EAL Program receive monthly Winnipeg Harvest hampers. Teachers Charlotte DeFehr and Jen Lopez are teaching students how to feed their families on a budget using staples that appear consistently in the monthly hampers.
“I think it is important for students to work together to do a project like this. They learn new English words, taste the soup and then try the soup at home,” Lopez explains. She goes on to explain that skill-based activities like this fit nicely with the national LINC curriculum because they are learning real life settlement skills and all the language that goes with them. “It has to do with healthy living. The food comes once a month, so we try to make a practical activity out of it,” DeFehr adds, explaining, “We are teaching them how to get the most out of the food from Harvest.”
Feeding the minds and bodies of the students at the WSD Adult EAL Program goes a long way to keeping everyone warm – inside and out!
