École Waterford Springs School to open January 2021

April 16, 2020 (Winnipeg, MB) – Winnipeg School Division’s (WSD) new school, ÉcoleWaterford Springs School, is slated to open January 2021. The new Nursery to Grade 8 dual-track school is located on the southeast corner of Jefferson and King Edward.

“Construction of École Waterford Springs School is going quite well and we’re very excited about seeing the final touches being put on our new school,” says Manuel Silva, Principal, École Waterford Springs School. “COVID-19 has presented us with some unexpected challenges, and that has resulted in a slightly later opening than originally planned.”

To ensure continuity for students moving from area host schools into the new school next January, WSD willhave École Waterford Springs School students in their grades and with their new teachers at their current host schools. The classes will behoused at the host schools from September to December, and will be ready to move to École Waterford Springs School as an existing class in January.

“Once class lists are complete, we will notify parents where the classes will be held for their children,” says Mr. Silva. “We are making every effort to keep the majority of students in the same host schools they have been in to date.” Mr. Silva noted that transportation will continue to be provided for students who live more than 1.6 km away from their host schooluntil they transition to the new school.

WSD was established in 1871 and currently has 78 (almost 79) schools, almost 33,000 students and 4,600 permanentemployees. Its purpose is to provide a learning environment that fosters the growth of each student’s potential and provide equitable opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and values necessary for meaningful participation in a global and diverse society.

Update - Feb. 2020:

We have a name! École Waterford Springs School.

“Naming the school has been a very important part of the building process for this community,” says Manuel Silva, Principal, École Waterford Springs School. “The committee had lengthy discussions, and many ideas including names of prominent and important Canadians, were considered. The final choice, however, identifies with the school’s geographical location and combines the names of the growing communities of Waterford Green, Castlebury Meadows and Castlebury Springs.”

Silva says the name is also similar enough to its location to identify with the neighbourhood. The committee felt it represents growth and a connection to nature and the Indigenous aspects being incorporated into the school. read more here
