In-School Opportunities

 

Have dreams of becoming a chef or carpenter? Maybe you want to learn the art of auto body painting. Students who have completed grade 10 and are 16 years of age have the opportunity to become a student apprentice. For every 110 hours of paid work experience the student completes, these hours can be transferred into a credit to be used towards high school graduation. (a maximum of 8 credits, (880 hours) can be earned through the Senior Years Apprenticeship Option).

School board bursaries are available to resident students taking academic courses in any secondary school in the division. The bursaries are awarded to a limited number of students presently in Grade 9, 10, and 11 based on family income and his her standing in school work during the current school year. ONLY students whose parents or legal guardians reside within the boundaries of The Winnipeg School Division are eligible to apply. Applications are available in Student Services.

Awards are open to Aboriginal students attending school full time. The program provides a continuing scholarship to selected students who exemplify leadership in both school and community. It is designed to encourage students to stay in school and to consider post-secondary education. It also provides summer employment for two students each year who display interest and capacity in municipal planning, and related fields. 7 awards and 2 job opportunities will be awarded this year. There is one award per grade level (6-12). Applications are available in Student Services.

Students who are fluent in an additional language may have the opportunity to complete a competency exam for an additional high school credit. See your guidance counsellor or career advisor for more information.

Company Program: A Student Venture - An after-school program offered by Junior Achievement that allows students to learn how to organize and operate their own business, raise capital and sell shares, create a marketing plan, and prepare a business plan, financial statement, and an annual report. Students (in grades 9 12) have the opportunitiy to receive scholarships for post-secondary education.

Are you a student who is fluent in sign language? If so, you have the opportunity to complete a competency exam for high school credit. Offered twice a year in November and May.

This is your opportunity to complete a first-year university (full or half credit) course taught by a university instructor while still in high school. Successful completion of courses allows students to obtain one high school credit (to contribute to high school graduation), and one university credit.
