New! For 2024-2025 - LTI: Learning Through Interests / Learning Through Internships

The LTI component of our program is one that we take our time building towards with each student. Individual student readiness is key, and students are supported in school to prepare for this community-based experience. In preparation for and during LTI, students are working towards high school credits such as the lifeworks credit, volunteer credits, and employment credits. 

THe LTI component helps to connect school work to the real world, and ideally, will complement the project-based learning that students do in the classroom. Through LTI, students can actively pursue their passions and explore their interests while actively involved in hands-on learning and gaining real-world skills. Students are mentored by both community members and their advisors while participating in LTI. Through LTI, students’ confidence and leadership skills are developed, helping them with every other aspect of their lives both at home and at school.

In grade 9, students begin by discovering their interests, exploring their passions, and gaining skills that they will need to be successful in the world such as speaking with adults/mentors, creating a resume, riding the bus, and gaining certifications such as First Aid / CPR or Food Handlers Certificates.

Beginning in grade 10, students will begin to spend part of their school week working with a mentor in the community first as a whole class, and then as students are ready in small groups and then individually. Students are supported through the entire process in gaining and maintaining an internship.

In grades 11 and 12, students continue to have access to LTI in a way that makes sense for them as an individual. Students will have the opportunity to pursue and maintain an internship placement independently or with others, and in an area of interest that they are passionate about pursuing.
