PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Here at John M. King School, all students grades one through grade six participate in the Physical Education program. We are proud to be a Quality Daily Physical Education (QDPE) school. This means that each class and every student receives a minimum of 30 minutes of instruction every single day!
During the early years, emphasis is placed on the acquisition of basic movement skills and their use in introductory and simple activities. Students begin to understand movement skills.
During the middle years, emphasis is on the acquisition and application of basic movement skills and their use in modified and lead-up activities. Students continue to develop their understanding of movement, as well as why they are important.
Our vision is to position Physical Education as a core part of student learning—equally valued alongside reading, writing, and numeracy. In addition to teaching movement and safety, we emphasize social-emotional development, teamwork, and healthy lifestyle choices—essential life skills that contribute to the overall well-being of every child.
The goal of each Physical Education teacher is to form positive relationships with the students and work on skills in class and have numerous, enriching and exciting “lunch clubs” which promote movement and personal responsibility. We want to hear students excited about their sport teams and clubs at JMK the night before (maybe at your dinner table?) that makes them excited and motivated to attend school. Phys. Ed. feels a real sense of responsibility to our school staff and our community to be a leader in this way.
HEALTH EDUCATION
All students in kindergarten through grade six also participate in the health education program with their classroom teacher, as per the Manitoba Curriculum requirements. Topics are taught through discussions, role play, and activities. This helps students learn about nutrition, personal hygiene, avoiding addictions, mental health, anti-bullying (including cyber bullying) and other relevant topics.
